With an additional 80,000 workers needed in the Construction industry by 2021, New Zealand will need to source skilled labour overseas.
Regional shortage of skilled labour
A recent forecast by the Ministry of Building and Construction shows that certain occupations will experience over 7 to 9% growth in the next few years with spendings exceeding $300b over the next decade. This means that New Zealand will increasingly rely on overseas talents for civil engineering jobs, electrician jobs, plumber jobs, and carpenter jobs. Regions that will most likely require this workforce include the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Northland.
This also includes post-study opportunities for overseas students who come to New Zealand to study construction, plumbing, gasfitting, drainlaying or electrical engineering, as suggested by the Waikato Institute of Technology.
