Kiwibuild: new initiatives for the construction industry

New measures to solve construction skill shortage

find a job in nzImmigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway has proposed measures to solve the New Zealand skills shortage in the construction industry. A temporary KiwiBuild Skills Shortage list would be a key measure to help build the houses and infrastructure that are so desperately needed for the country. Key occupations featuring on that list would see their visa processed facilitated.

Streamlined immigration processes

Another important measure proposed is an employer accreditation or similarly streamlined process for construction companies that have been vetted and show good practices, and that need to recruit overseas staff to bridge the local skill gap.

Last but not least, labour hire companies would also see a new accreditation system be put in place, largely to protect migrant workers and incentivise good employment practices.

Working together

A recent forum in Auckland also saw opportunities to encourage Asian investment to help addressing the skills shortage in the construction industry. Although the existing contribution of Asian investment has been acknowledged, it is believed that more can be done to work together and "bridge that gap".
