Maximum AEWV duration extended
Accredited Employer Work Visas (AEWV) approved from 27 November 2023 will be granted for up to 5 years (only 3 currently). This will only apply for applicants who are offered at least median wage. These five years can be on one AEWV or multiple AEWVs of shorter durations. If you are reaching the end of your AEWV and you are not on a pathway to residence, you will have to leave New Zealand and spend 12 months outside New Zealand before you are can be granted a further AEWV.
What if I am on a pathway to residence when my AEWV expires?
If you are on a recognised pathway to residence or working towards it, you will be able to apply to stay on an AEWV without spending the 12 months outside New Zealand. Your eligibility will be determined via meeting a certain skill threshold (occupational registration, qualification or income) but requiring more time and skilled work experience in New Zealand.
What if I am not paid or offered median wage?
AEWV holders paid below the median wage and employed under Sector Agreements may have shorter maximum continuous stays or periods required outside New Zealand before reapplying.
What this means for current AEWV holders
If you already hold an Accredited Employer Work visa or it is granted on or before 26 November 2023, you will be able to apply for a further AEWV to receive the balance of up to five years (in total). You will need to remain on a job (or have a job offer) that pays at least the median wage.
Is this an automated process?
The extension process will not be automated, but employers will not need to apply for a further Job Check if they are offering continued employment to someone who holds an AEWV, providing the worker's visa conditions remain the same. The employer can reuse their existing job token.
Care workforce AEWV extensions from two to three years
If you are employed within the Care Workforce Sector Agreement and paid below the median wage, your visa may be extended from two to three years. Any visas approved from 27 November 2023 will be for 3 years. Existing visas and visas approved before 27 November can be extended to receive the balance of up to 3 years, without the employer requiring a new job check, as long as the role remains the same.
