22 Things To Do In New Zealand – No. 19 “The Routeburn Track”

This world-renowned tramping track is an impressive 32 kms long and is found in New Zealand’s South Island. No trip to New Zealand is complete without completing a tramping trip on one of the many tracks of the South Island, and the Routeburn track is one of the most stunning.

This track is classified as a Great Walk by the New Zealand Department of Conservation, which maintains four huts along the track: Routeburn Flats Hut, Routeburn Falls Hut, Mackenzie Hut, and Howden Hut; there is also an emergency shelter at Harris Saddle.

Spanning two National Parks, this area gets much less rain than the popular Milford Sound, and the nature is very different due to less rainfall, with relatively few ferns. A large portion of the track is on the high ridges around Harris Saddle, with beautiful long-distance views in many directions. The track has a long history of use dating back to the 1880s.
