Do you need your overseas qualifications to be assessed and why?

If you’ve completed your education outside New Zealand and plan to work, study, or apply for residency here, you may need an International Qualification Assessment (IQA). This process, managed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), evaluates how your overseas qualification compares to New Zealand’s education system.

Who Needs an IQA?

An IQA is often required if:

You’re applying for a resident visa under the Skilled Migrant Category or another visa that requires qualification recognition.
You need to meet occupational registration requirements for certain professions in New Zealand.
You want to study further in New Zealand and need your qualifications assessed for admission.

However, an IQA might not be necessary if your qualification is listed under the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment (LQEA)—NZQA provides this list to indicate which international qualifications are already recognised without needing further evaluation.

The Assessment Process

To obtain an IQA, you’ll need to submit:

Certified copies of your qualification certificates and transcripts.
Identification documents (e.g., passport).
A completed application form and payment of the required fee.

NZQA will then review your qualifications and provide an assessment report, which details how your qualification compares to New Zealand’s Qualifications Framework (NZQF). In some cases, an additional "Comparability Assessment" may be needed, especially for specific professions.

How Long Does It Take?

The standard processing time for an IQA is 20 working days, but it may take longer if additional information is required. It’s recommended to apply well in advance, especially if your visa or job application depends on the outcome.
