Overseas workers needed to bridge the workforce shortfall
The skill shortage in the construction industry is such that an estimated 55,000 to 60,000 additional workers are expected to be needed in the next 5 years. With almost 70% of jobs on the long term skill shortage in the construction industry, this means there are a lot of opportunities to migrate to NZ for those that have the skillset needed to contribute to the building of new houses, roads, and other infrastructure, at all levels.
It is expected more construction companies will continue to source international workers for at least a few more years.
Back in January, seven building-related occupations were been added to the Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL) to allow easier recruitment from overseas, including:
- plumber,
- roof tiler,
- fibrous plasterer
- carpenter
- joiner
