The new National Government elected last week has campaigned on making positive changes to the economy by "attracting top talent" from offshore, "reviving international education, and supporting startups". We can therefore expect this Government and new Prime Minister Chris Luxon to roll up their sleeves and implement changes that will facilitate recruitment of offshore talents.
"Attracting the best and brightest to New Zealand, whatever their field, has real potential for innovation and growth across the economy" MP Erica Stanford says. Some ideas pitched by National earlier this year included an International Graduates Visa to allow people who recently graduated from the top 100 universities in the world, a Global Growth Tech Visa, and a Digital Nomad visa, for mobile IT/media specialists to come for a taste of New Zealand while remaining employed overseas, and possibly settle here indefinitely. Onshore migrants are not left out since National also aims to introduce a multiple entry Parent Visa Boost which would allow foreign nationals with NZ citizen or resident children to come and stay with them in New Zealand for up to 5 years.
Lastly, in a pledge to revive the international education sector, which was severely impacted by the COVID pandemic, National plans on introducing fast-track processing student visas, increase in-study part-time work rights, and expand work rights for tertiary students' partners, all in an attempt to highlight how great a study destination New Zealand really is!
